day 168_december 30, 2008

A day trip to Basel.  The sun was out but very cold.  Every chance we had to take shelter we did.  We were here once before, in the summer, back on day 46_august 30, 2008.  We started out exploring the Gundeldingen area, purely by accident.  It wasn’t very interesting so we hopped on one of […]

. . . . . . . Yes, the kinderwagon keeps on rollin’.  So useful and by now little little has become accustomed to the sometimes awkward ride.

. Our last full day in Amsterdam.  We walked in the opposite direction of city center and explored the area which includes the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum and the iconic I amsterdam sign.  We also had dinner at one of our favorite fresh noodle restaurants, Wagamama, which are also in Boston and Cambridge. . . […]

. . Yes, there are a lot of bicycles in Amsterdam.  They are everywhere and its important to watch out for them.  Apparently there are no rules for cyclists.  No stopping at intersections or yielding to others. They ring their bells and that gives them the right-of-way.  Maybe!  It’s actually quite annoying.  The sidewalks are […]

day 155_december 17, 2008

The beginning of five days in Amsterdam.  This was one of the two that we had sunny weather.  I really like this city.  The canals and old row house style buildings have a very colonial/New England feel.  So much texture.  Also, unlike Luzern and just about everywhere else, all the restaurants and businesses are non-smoking.  […]

day 153_december 15, 2008

We spent the last couple of weeks wondering where people go to buy their Christmas trees.  Our conclusion was that they must all hike up an alp and cut them down.  Well, a week before Christmas and the day before we leave for Amsterdam for the week the entire lakefront path at old town becomes […]

day 145_december 07, 2008

All over Luzern these temporary holiday villages sprouted up with vendors hawking their years worth of crafts. There were also places to have sausages and the traditional mulled wine. Mulled wine, from the olden days, was made using the spoiled red wine and making it drinkable by adding spices and honey.  I tried some.  Not […]
