Before heading back to Switzerland, we had morning coffee and croissants at the top of Fleming’s Deluxe Hotel at Eschenheimer Tor. This hotel is a draw for tourists because it is one of only a handful of buildings that still has in operation a continuous step-on, step-off elevator. There are no elevator doors. No buttons […]

The images below are of the MMK Kunstmuseum Frankfurt. On view, Douglas Gordon video pieces, an exhibit titled Zuhause, and works from their permanent collection The architecture of the building won out on capturing our interest. Designed by a Vienna-based architecture firm, it has a very 80′s feel despite opening in the early 90′s.

Here we are in Frankfurt for a post-Christmas trip to visit friends. On our first night we experienced Gemalten Haus, which is an establishment not suited for vegetarians. Mounds and mounds of every conceivable type of meat piled high on our plates. And to wash it down, Apfelwein.

About a fifteen minute train ride south of Stockholm there is a beautiful modern cathedral designed by Sigurd Lewerentz. St. Mark’s in Björkhagen, completed in 1956. By standing in the entry courtyard, it is easily discernible that this building is built perfectly to the human scale. The coursing of the brick reaches up to the […]

I think it’s a skinny rat. One of the creatures we discovered at Junibacken fantasy land in Stockholm. If going, you must take the story train. It is a narrated ride, up and down, and past elaborate handmade vignettes that correspond to the story Marit Törnqvist created. There is also a section of this museum […]

Arkitekturmuseet, Stockholm. On special exhibit…hundreds of gingerbread projects on display for judging. They varied from the elaborate traditional, traditional modern, humorous, extravagant, outside the box, and decorated social commentary. No sampling, though, bummer.
