Schaulager. The special exhibition ‘Prayer Sheet with the Wound and the Nail’ by Matthew Barney.  I understand his concept behind the Drawing Restraint series but that is about all that I understand. We first saw his work at the Guggenheim in New York. The Cremaster Cycle. Wow. This exhibition was nothing like that although there were a few pieces on display from the New York show. The film Drawing Restraint 9: Dejima was my favorite from this exhibit. The video of the whaling ship and images of Japan were absolutely stunning.

The Schaulager institution, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is a huge facility with only the ground floor and lower level accessible to the public for exhibitions.  The ‘gate keepers hut’ serves as the initial compression in the series and is a perfect blind for the embedded exterior lighting which illuminates the ‘center stage’ at night.  From the interior lobby atrium one can see all the way up to the top levels and it’s designed to look like a huge, sterile repository for art.  It is so intriguing and begs to be explored.  Some day with other credentials.
